Ashcakes Recipe

Once upon a time I worked at a little girls camp called Oakcrest.  We would make a little treat called, "Ashcakes."  They aren't that great honestly, (but for girls camp certification purposes cooking right on hot ashes qualifies as another way to cook...nudge, nudge, wink, wink!) but with enough butter, cinnamon and sugar they are fantastic!

Ashcakes
  1. Let your fire simmer down so it is nothing but white hot ashes.
  2. Combine the follow:
  • 2 1/2 lbs flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • Add enough water to turn the ingredients into dough
      3. Roll the dough into however large or small ashcakes you desire and toss them carefully on top of the hot ashes.
      4. Flip the ashcake over a few times until you feel it is done.  Preferably before it is totally charcoal black.
      5. Safely remove ashcake from the ashes.  Drizzle ashcake with butter, honey, cinnamon, sugar, anything you can think of and enjoy!
      6.  This recipe should be enough for about 24 ashcakes, but then again it all depends on how large and small you make your ashcakes.
